Days before the beginning of this year, authorities once again warned of phone calls from criminals attempting to extort money from residents based on lies and fear. Jocotepec President José Miguel Gómez López warned of the situation through a video posted on the City of Jocotepec’s Facebook page. He mentioned even government offices have seen their own cases. “People attempting to frighten and extort money through a series of calls to residents and public offices have triggered investigations into these cases,” Gómez López said in the video. Gómez López also reported that the extortionists pose as members of a criminal group and collect personal information to cause uncertainty and fear in their victims. “Many callers, supposedly from the Jalisco Cartel New Generation, recite call recipients’ full names, addresses, and other data that they have been collecting for some time. The callers then start demanding amounts of 40,000 pesos, then reduce their demand to 30,000, then 20,000. Many people are falling victim to this extortion.” “These are people who are not even here in Jocotepec. Their contacts (most of whom are in prison or other states) pass them the information needed to make these calls. But they are all profiteers. They are professional extortionists who are simply dedicated to intimidate and frighten people in an attempt to separate them from their money,” the president said. Gómez López reassured Jocotepec residents that the city is calm. He asked recipients of these calls to simply hang up.
